Taking time out to recover after a tough gym session is vital – it helps re-energize and rebuild your muscles. As the basic building blocks of muscle, amino acids are essential for protein synthesis, which helps improve the body’s ability to repair itself and the speed at which it recovers. BCAA (leucine, isoleucine and valine) are considered the most important amino acids for recovery, with leucine widely thought to be central for muscle building. As a result, most recovery products include one or more BCAA with different variations of other ingredients. Another amino acid said to aid recovery is L-citrulline, which is used to reduce muscle soreness – both between sets and after workouts.
