Beta-alanine (also known as β-Alanine) is a non-essential amino acid produced in the liver. It’s also a hybrid of two other well-known neurotransmitters in the body, L-glycine and GABA. Beta-alanine is shown to increase the levels of carnosine in the muscles, which may help reduce the buildup of acid. This in turn could lead to greater muscular endurance, less fatigue and higher running capacity. Supplementing with beta-alanine is thought to be more effective than taking carnosine on its own. This because beta-alanine has a greater bioavailability than carnosine. Anecdotal evidence suggests taking beta-alanine may allow gym goers to perform up to 2 additional repetitions per set when training in sets of 8-15.
