The Jimmy Joy meal replacement has even been included on a verified list of top meal replacement shakes where it was ranked third and considered the “best meal replacement shake for men on a budget”.

Today, we’re going to take a deep dive into the Jimmy Joy ingredients list to determine whether or not the Plenny Shake is worth it for weight loss.

Jimmy Joy Review Summary

Don’t want to read the whole Jimmy Joy review? Fair enough. We’ll sum it up right here for those of you that want to skip the details.

This Jimmy Joy review found the Plenny Shake to be nutritionally adequate, with a good choice of ingredients. In addition, the Plenny Shake is vegan friendly, low GI, naturally flavoured, and nutritionally dense.

That said, better fats could have been selected and for athletes the shake lacks enough protein.

Most people find that the Plenny Shake tastes great, and it comes in convenient, high-quality recycled packaging.

Jimmy Joy Plenny Shake Ingredients

There are plenty of Jimmy Joy review posts on the internet that focus on the taste of the meal replacement and the quality of the packing.

But to be sure a shake is worth the money you have to focus on the ingredients. In particular, the quality of the ingredients and the amounts of each included.

A good meal replacement shake will have nutrient-rich ingredients that provide you with everything you need to be healthy. What’s more, meal replacement shakes should include ingredients known to keep you feeling full for longer.

Finally, a good meal shakes will avoid using added sugar to improve the taste and use only low GI (Glycemic Index) carbohydrates that don’t cause blood sugar spikes.

A blood sugar spike can easily be caused by added sugars, but it can also be caused by high-GI carbs, that’s carbs the body consumes quickly, like white bread. When you get a blood sugar spike you’ll feel energetic for a moment before crashing down.

This can be a huge problem for people who focused on weight loss, as a blood sugar crash can make you feel extremely hungry, not to mention lightheaded and weak. That’s the last thing you want while trying to maintain a calorie deficit.

How Do the Jimmy Joy Ingredients Rate?

The Jimmy Joy ingredients rate well and meet the standards discussed above. Let’s start by examining the carbohydrates.

Plenny Shake Carbs

The main source of carbohydrates in the Plenny Shake meal replacement is oats. Oats have a low GI of around 55.

By comparison, white bread has a GI of 100. This means the carbs from the shake will break down slowly inside the body. As a result, the energy they contain will be released gradually, giving the body time to process it as needed rather than having to store it as fat.

Additionally, Jimmy Joy contains treated rice flour as a second source of carbohydrates. The fact that it is treated is important because untreated rice flour has a GI of 88, while the treated variety has a GI of just 46 [1].

The Jimmy Joy website claims the rice flour will provide “immediate energy free from sugar”, but science suggests it will also be a slow-release form of energy, and there is nothing wrong with that when it comes to dietary meal shakes.

Plenny Shake Proteins

For many of you a meal replacement shake’s protein content will be very important, and not without good reason.

Protein is important for making you feel full and is thus important for a shake since you probably want to avoid the challenge of dieting while permanently hungry. No need to make weight loss any harder than it already is.

Plenty of high-quality protein in a shake will make it filling and, what’s more, it will enable you to continue training, building lean muscle, and improving your performance while shredding fat.

Jimmy Joy is a plant-based shake, making it suitable for vegans. As such, it contains plant-based soy protein, along with soy flour, flax seeds, and the aforementioned oat flour, all of which are fairly high in protein. This is also a small amount of rice protein.

In total, Jimmy Joy contains 20g of protein. This is not as much as some of the high-end shakes intended for pro and amateur athletes, but it is a substantial amount that will keep you feeling full and able to maintain muscle mass.

Plenny Shake Fibre

Meal replacement shakes need to have plenty of fibre if they are going to be effective for weight loss. Fibre regulates blood sugar levels and it’s also important for digestion and lowering cholesterol.

Fibre-filled meal replacement shakes cause a gradual absorption of macro and micronutrients, ensuring your body uses them rather than stores them away as body fat.

Jimmy Joy has flaxseed, oats, and inulin, all of which are excellent sources of fibre. The total amount of fibre in the Jimmy Joy shake is 8.2g.

Compared to a top-of-the-line product, like Instant Knockout Complete with its 13g of fibre, Jimmy Joy’s fibre content is a little on the low side. But for most people, it should be adequate.

Plenny Shake Vitamins and Minerals

Using shakes to achieve weight loss can often come at the expense of getting all the essential vitamins and minerals that are normally acquired through eating a varied diet. Not so when you choose a Jimmy Joy shake.

The Jimmy Joy Plenny Shake contains 26 vitamins and minerals, covering all the essentials, including a sizeable dose of immune-boosting vitamin D.

Plenny Shake Fats

Once upon a time fats had a bad name, but now we know they are just as important as the other macronutrients, you just need to choose the right ones. Without enough fats in a shake there is again the danger of feeling unsatisfied and hungry.

The Jimmy Joy shake contains two sources of fats: sunflower oil and flaxseeds. The latter is an excellent source of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and while sunflower oil is also rich in both, other oils are preferable.

Coconut oil, for example, contains omega-3 and 6, along with medium chain triglycerides, which are a type of fat that actually increases your metabolism.

Plenny Shake Diet Extras

On top of all the other ingredients, Jimmy Joy has included a prebiotic and a probiotic to ensure you can digest all the healthy ingredients smoothly and effectively, keeping your gut health intact.

The only drawbacks are the choice of fats and a slight lack of fibre and protein.

Plenny Shake Review: Taste

The Jimmy Joy shakes come in a variety of flavours. You can choose between vanilla, chocolate, mango, coconut, pistachio, strawberry, caramel sea salt, banana, coffee, and passionfruit.

Most of the reviews and comments report satisfaction with the taste and having tried a couple we can confirm that they have an authentic flavour.

What’s more, the Plenny Shake has a great flavour and all the Jimmy Joy shakes are available at affordable prices.

The only drawbacks are the lower fibre and protein content compared with some other meal replacements. If you’re an athlete or particularly active person, this might be a reason not to choose Plenny Shakes.

  1. I’m currently using Jimmy Joy and sadly I am not thrilled at all with it at all. I am coninuning with it because I started this as a 30-day challenge and want to complete it. The ‘shake’ feels like I am drinking a glass of grit. I had to start making the shakes with milk instead of water just to make them feel more substantial. Honestly, I am hungry within a half hour of consumption, and it contains 400 calories! I would have imagined that I would have been, a least a tiny bit, satiated by the shake, but I am not. I’m regular weight and have a regular appetite yet I am so hungry after drinking. (Perhaps I misread and this is a weight-gaining shake?) I’ll finish them but sadly I will not order them again.
