What Is It?

L-Theanine is a non-dietary amino acid that helps bring about a sense of relaxation without inducing sleep. Theanine is found predominantly in tea leaves and is responsible for tea's calming effects on the body.

What Does It Do?

As mentioned above, theanine has a calming effect on the body. For this reason, it's often included in many sleep aids and anti-anxiety formulas commonly supplemented. Clinical studies have shown that daily consumption of 200mg of the amino improved the overall quality of sleep, although it didn't increase the length of time individuals were sleeping.

Additionally, theanine also works synergistically with caffeine. Most notably, it helps to take the "edge" off the harsh stimulant kick that high doses of caffeine give some individuals. Furthermore, theanine also helps to improve the cognitive effects of caffeine yielding a stronger focus during your workouts when the two are consumed together.

Lastly, L-theanine may act as a glutamate antagonist in the body.

Why is this important?

Stress hormones (glucocorticoids) are activated by both stress and depression. Scientists have theorized thatglutamate receptor antagonists may offset the harmful effects of high glucocorticoid level byblocking certain signals in the brain activated by glutamate. This leads to a significant reduction in stress, anxiety, and even provides some neuroprotective benefits.

Benefits of L-Theanine

  • Reduce Stress
  • Elevate Mood
  • Supports Relaxation
  • Enhances Focus
  • Improves Sleep Quality
  • Lowers Anxiety
  • Eases Harsh Effects of Stimulants

How Much?

Studies have shown that to improve sleep quality, a daily dose of 200mg of L-Theanine provides the clinical benefits found in research.

To ease the harsh kick of stimulants and ease the jitters, doses of 100-200mg of L-Theanine have be found to be successful.
