What is Synephrine?

Synephrine is a naturally occurring alkaloid compound found in plants and extracted for use due to its similarity to Ephedrine. It is also known by the namesCitrus Aurantiumor Bitter Orange. It was traditionally used in Chinese medicine to help with various gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, constipation, or indigestion. In South American cultures, synephrine was used as an anticonvulsant and to help alleviate symptoms of anxiety or sleeplessness.

Currently, synephrine is most commonly found in a number of pre workout and weight loss supplements due to its stimulatory and fat burning effects on the body.

Where Does It Come From?

Synephrine can be found in the fruit of a plant known asCitrus Aurantium.It is an alkaloid molecule that is the most bioactive ingredient in the bitter orange.

What does it do?

Synephrine is a stimulant, similar to ephedrine or caffeine. It is thought to exhibit similar effects in terms of providing increased energy, suppressing appetite and increasing metabolic rate, which leads to more calories being burned.

Synephrine is classified as an adrenergic amines that stimulates the beta-3 receptors in the body with minimal effect on the other receptors (alpha and beta-1,2). These beta-3 receptors are responsible for lipolytic and thermogenic effects (fat-burning and temperature raising), while the beta-1 & 2 receptors induce a relaxation of smooth muscle and excitation of cardiac muscle. Not surprisingly, it would be ideal to activate these beta-3 receptors and minimize the stimulation of beta-1 & 2 receptors.

Because of this, metabolic rate increases without any increase to blood pressure or heart rate. Another side effect of beta-3 receptor stimulations is the release of adrenaline and noradrenaline into the bloodstream which are mostly located in the liver and adipose (fat) tissue. This showcases synephrines ability to induce lipolysis, the breakdown and release of fatty acids.

Synephrine can also enhance glucose uptake in skeletal muscle. This is beneficial for a couple reasons.. First, it helps you lose fat by removing excess glucose from the bloodstream and storing it in the muscle tissue instead of adipose (fat) tissue. Second, the increased glucose levels in the muscle provide an incredibly efficient form or energy which will allow you to exercise for longer bouts with more intensity than you normally would.

When taken in combination with caffeine, both ingredients effects are enhanced, leading to enhanced fat mobilization, increased levels of energy, and better appetite suppression.
