What is Hordenine?

Hordenine (N,N-dimethyltyramine) is a naturally occurring alkaline molecule found in a variety of plants alongside other adrenergic compounds like synephrine or tyramine. Hordenine is classified as a stimulant that may induce weight loss. Because it is a Central Nervous System (CNS) stimulant, Hordenine is showing up more and more in fat burners and pre workout supplements.

Its chemically related to the amino acid l-tyrosines derivative, tyramine, and N-methyltyramine, which are also commonly found in many pre workout products.

Where Does It Come From?

Hordenine was originally discovered in sprouted barley, but is also found in a number of other plants including: bitter orange (most often associated with another stimulant, synephrine), Pancratium maritimum, Galanthus plants, and half a dozen other families of flowers.

However, its only effective when taken supplementally. Hordenine is typically used in low doses when paired with other ingredients, as explained further down.

What does it do?

Hordenines most notable action is that of a noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor. Basically this means it delays the reabsorption of the neurotransmitter by the body. This in turn leads to a longer amount of time that noradrenaline is actively working in the body. But why would you want this?

By inhibiting the reuptake of noradrenaline, the focus and energy effects you receive from the other ingredients in your pre workout will have a prolonged effect, meaning MORE focus, concentration, and energy as compared to a pre workout that doesnt contain hordenine.

Additionally, Hordenine is metabolized by MAO-B (Monoamine Oxidase subset B), which makes it behave similar to an MAO Inhibitor. What does this mean?

MAO-B is usually associated in keeping levels of dopamine in check. With MAO-B temporarily blocked, this allows your dopamine levels to increase somewhat, which results in improved mood and motivation.

Once your body metabolizes hordenine, your dopamine levels will return to normal and no longer will you be floating on cloud 9, but by that point youll already be in the middle of your workout more focused on your bench and deadlifts than about how happy you feel.

Also, as mentioned above, hordenine is a CNS stimulant, triggering the release of norepinephrine in the body. Norepinephrine is considered lipolytic, meaning it helps free fatty acids from adipose (fat) tissue. When this the occurs, the liberated fatty acids can then be burned for energy and lead to a reduction in overall body fat levels.

There is some thought that hordenine plays a role in resetting the bodys natural set-point. The set-point is the equilibrium your body naturally maintains and will resist any sort of change to increase or decrease overall body mass. This set-point can be one of the reasons youre having trouble dropping body fat or adding slabs of muscle. By realigning your set-point, you could drop those last few pounds for good and not constantly fight your own bodys stubbornness.

Finally, hordenine also helps with weight loss by slowing the digestion of food. This makes the time between meals seem more manageable and youll be less likely to raid the vending machine and blow your caloric budget for the day.
