What Is It?

Chondroitin sulfate is a molecule found naturally in the body. It isa major component of cartilage, the tough, connective tissue that cushions the joints. Chondroitinis often used to treat joint disorders, such as osteoarthritis, and problems with the chewing muscles and joint.

What Does It Do?

Chondroitin has been investigated in numerous clinical trials as an effective treatment for osteoarthritis. Chondroitin helps maintain healthy cartilage healthy by absorbing fluid (particularly water) into the connective tissue.

Additional studies suggest it may also block certain enzymes that break down cartilage. Chondroitin also provides the building blocks required for the production of new cartilage in the body.

However, the research is far from conclusive on chondroitin. Several clinical trials have shown conflicting or inconclusive results. The largest review in 2006 did not show chondroitin reduced knee pain or helped repair/grow new cartilage.
