This really is a review on
Glutamine, not necessarily this brand specific because I don't feel it is too different than if comparing say,
Kre-Alkalyn vs.
Monohydrate,
Muscle Milk vs.
Pro Complex. For the most part,
Glutamine is
Glutamine. Sure, there's pill form, pH buffered, powders..but whatever.
SciFit is just a brand I've come to trust for a lot of products so it works for me.
Glutamine really has become a staple for me. I used to always say to people just starting to get into supplements, the perfect foundation is a good
Multi-Vitamin and a
Fish Oil. Now it's a pyramid, with
Glutamine on top.
Glutamine is an essential element in your body, but your body naturally produces so little of it. So, your body needs a lot more of it. It's a true product you actually need to supplement.
However, it's considered "non-essential" because you can make it, but when you workout, your muscles suck up every drop of it. And when you're lifting almost every day.. you can see why you need to supplement it.
It's the reigning supreme champ in
recovery in my opinion. Since it's largely sourced in your muscles, a deficiency can cause catabolism, which is the opposite of building muscle. It also plays a part in immune function and mainly keeping your muscles in peak condition.
I did a three day food log and calculated every macro nutrient, vitamin, mineral, calorie, carb, fat, etc. for everything I ate. This excluded my
Multi-Vitamin, and for the most part, I wasn't deficient in anything by a landslide. A Multi can help fill in the gaps, but it's not the same for
Glutamine.
One problem with
Glutamine though is it is very perishable. As soon as it's mixed, it's value will begin to decay in water. So I usually add this last in a shake, and as soon as you blend or shake it up, you wanna slam it down to get the most bang for buck.
It's recommended to take 5g a day, twice. I find it near perfect to sandwich in between your workout. 5g pre and 5g post. Sometimes another 5 before bed.
I'm using the powder currently, and you can sort of taste it. It's tasteless though, but when it's in your
protein shake, you can taste something kinda bitter. Again, it's in no way a turn off, and I will always supplement.
