Can Performance Whey help me perform better everyday?
    —-Quick Summary—-

PIN and Mark Wahlberg’s entry into the supplement game. This is their take on a “Performance” whey. I like a lot of the things this does, but the taste makes me look elsewhere.

    —-Introduction—-

Hello people, I am a 46 year old supplement junky. I happened to be shopping at my local Hy-Vee store and found that Mark Wahlberg has a supplement line and that we didn’t have any reviews on the products. So I picked up a few to see what the deal was. I assume we all use Protein powders and so I picked up the Decadent Natural Chocolate Flavor to see how I could use it and if it was worth the money. I am still trying to lock my diet and training into a good groove. Sometimes I am on point, sometimes I am not. I figured I could use this as a snack in the afternoon and also to add protein to my morning smoothies. If you want to read more about what I do feel free to check my log. Although I will clarify that my log is a little lacking as I am “fixing” my back. (which I know I keep saying is going good, and it is, just not perfect yet.)

All in all I don’t think this is a bad profile. It is kind of normal to see this breakdown. That being said I think NutraBio has a much cleaner profile. This is said to be 100% natural, which is totally possible. However I see at least one ingredient they could drop in my opinion, (carrageenan) now some people have no issue with this, in fact I don’t think it bothers me. However I have a friend who does notice issues when he uses products with it. I posted a link below of one article on it.

    —-Taste/Mix-ability/Dosing—-

Here is where natural comes and bites you in the butt. I bought the “Decadent Natural Chocolate Flavor” and I didn’t like it. It tastes like one of the old protein powders before taste became an important thing. It isn’t bad, just not good. I didn’t like it and neither did my daughter. You know one of those, I can drink it, it just isn’t great. It also had a weird aftertaste.

This seemed to mix ok with water. If you shake it enough you can get a pretty good result. I did occasionally have a few floaties in it. So comparing it to other high end proteins it just isn’t that good.

Dosing is pretty simple, it is protein, take it when you want to in order to fulfill your daily needs. I tended to use it as either an afternoon snack (hence my disappointment in taste) or in my morning smoothie to add protein. They say to mix 1 scoop in 8 to 10 ounces of your choice of liquid. Of course they say for “Maximum” results take 2 times a day.

    —-Effectiveness—-

So here is the toughest thing to make comments on in my opinion. Protein powder what is it supposed to do? Well, I guess I will tell you what I use it for and if it was effective for my needs.

    1. Added protein into my daily calories? Yes, I honestly don’t use as much powder as I have in the past, but this was pretty easy to add when I wanted to, and it is the amount I am currently looking for.

    2. Does it taste good, digest easily? Well, the answer is MEH, on the taste and yes on the digestion. I had no gas or stomach discomfort so this is quality, just not the best tasting.

    3. Satisfy my need to have a tasty treat? Not really, it was chocolate for sure, but it didn’t satisfy that need I occasionally have for something that at least tastes unhealthy. (I know kind of part of question 2)

    4. Does it help tide me over until my next whole food meal? In this case it did do that. Now whether that was the 5g’s of fiber or the fact that my taste buds where unhappy and needed time to recover I do not know.

So at the end of the day, the effectiveness is entry level at a premium level price. Meaning, it does what it is supposed to do, I just would choose other options.

    —-Value—-

I bought this at my local Hy-Vee store for $34.99 for a 2.22# jug, which is 24 servings. Which equates to $1.46 a serving. This is a premium price. However they do give a minimum of 2% to charity, and it is an all natural “premium” product.

As of 7/26/2018 I found this for the following prices.

PI has it on their website for $33.99.
    https://pi-nutrition.com/shop/protein/performance-whey-protein/

Amazon also has it and is priced at $33.57.
    https://www.amazon.com/Performance-Inspired-Nutrition-Decadent-Chocolate/dp/B06XDNJFNG?th=1

I can get NutraBio’s Classic whey for $32.99 for 26 servings. TigerFitness has Machine Whey for $29.99 for 23 servings. So the price isn’t totally out of line. However I can get bigger jugs of the other brands which brings down the cost per serving. This leads me to say it is a little over priced in my opinion. So price wise I would look elsewhere, however in a pinch or immediate need it isn’t going to break the bank.

    —-Side Effects—-

Other than the fact that the taste wasn’t great I had no negative side effects.

    —-Conclusion—-

The conclusion on this is kind of a mixed bag. I think it is one of those ones that in my younger days would of scored higher. I just honestly am stuck on the taste. I understand that it is “ALL NATURAL”, but other companies have better tasting products. Call me old, but I don’t have time for protein that I don’t enjoy drinking. So I am giving this straight 7’s and a Meh rating. For me it just doesn’t float my boat. When I look at the product it isn’t crazy over priced, it doesn’t taste terrible either. It just isn’t as good as other options that are available. So I can’t tell you not to try it (as everybody has different tastes) I will just say that for me it is a pass.
