By the time I ordered
SuperPump250, I was pretty comfortable with
pre-workouts and their effects. I had come to realize that I was tolerant of stimulants and didn’t get much of an energy kick or focus boost from PWO’s. As such, I wanted a
pre-workout that, above all else, gave me a great pump, and I eventually decided to give SP250 a go. Prior to SP250, I had finished tubs of
Jack3d and
White Flood and had tried 1MR.
I have finished an 800 gram tub of the Blue Raspberry flavor, as well as a 280 gram mini-tub of Tropical Punch. I have also tried both the Grape Cooler and Refreshing Orange flavors. I normally dosed two full scoops of SP250 roughly 30 minutes prior to my workouts on an empty stomach.
TASTE & MIXABILITY: 8/10
All the flavors of SuperPump that I have tried have a very similar taste profile. They are all tart, sharp, and extremely sour, especially when mixed with only 4-12 oz. of water, which is the amount recommended on the directions. Below are my rankings for each flavor:
Grape: 8.5/10
Orange: 7.5/10
Tropical Punch: 7/10
Blue Raspberry: 6.5/10
Of course it was the flavor that I decided to purchase a full tub of that I ended up liking the least. To me, the Blue Raspberry flavor was so overwhelmingly sour that at times it was difficult to drink. I found myself having to mix my two scoops with close to 24 oz. of water to make the flavor less powerful. The sourness was so strong that I didn’t find the BR to taste anything like BR. In contrast, I found the Grape much more agreeable and, of the four flavors I tried, the least tart.
Regardless of flavor or amount of water, SP250 always mixed cleanly and without any gritty residue. There was usually a bit of foaming created in the mixing process that would remain until the drink was finished, but it was not a sizeable amount.
EFFECTIVENESS: 6.5/10
For me, SuperPump fell victim to what I like to call the “New Relationship” effect. The first few doses of SP250 are awesome; hot, heavy, and all kinds of good. By the second and third week, things start to slow down - you’re not feeling quite as excited about the product but all your needs are satisfied… and hey, why mess with a good thing right? Unfortunately, week four or five rolls around and finds you bored, uninterested, unsatisfied, and pretty sure that SP250’s hot friend
Muscle Marinade has been checking you out from across the bar.
Regrettably this pretty accurately describes my experience with SP250. The first workout was incredible, so much so that my workout buddies actually asked what it was that I taken that was making me such a
Monster in the gym. My focus was laser-like, my energy was through the roof, and I was getting an insane pump. Given my experiences with other PWO’s, I didn’t expect the increased energy and focus to last and I was correct in that assumption. But over time I found that even the pump I was getting from the product just didn’t seem to be as “full” or “bulging” as I was used to. I wasn’t getting the sick vascular blast or that skin-stretching sensation we all know and love. It eventually got to the point where I started supplementing SP250, first with Nox 3000 and then with
Nitrox II.
VALUE: 5/10
In my book, if you have to supplement a supplement in order to feel the full effects, then that product is not a very good value. If you look at the numbers an 800 gram tub contains 40 scoops and costs $34, which equates to a per-serving cost of $0.85. In contrast,
Jack3d will run you a much cheaper cost of $0.57 per scoop,
Assault a comparable $0.87 per scoop, and NO Xplode a decent $0.68 per scoop.
Now, a lot of a product’s value will depend on just how much of the product an individual needs per serving in order to feel the full effects. Obviously a person that need 3 scoops of
Jack3d but only 1 of SP250 would be better off, at least in terms of money, to go with SuperPump. That being said, I don’t think SP250’s serving price is truly a good deal when compared to the competition, and it seems like many of the other PWO’s available offer more for less.
OVERALL: 6.5/10
Unfortunately SP250 earns the lowest marks of any product I’ve reviewed to date. It’s too bad because I feel like Gaspari is a solid company with some really fantastic product offerings. Despite my experiences, I am still interested in the new SuperPumpMax – Gaspari’s attempt at a concentrated PWO – and will most likely give it a go at some point in the future.
Additionally, there is something to be said for the infamous “SuperDumps” rumored to be caused by this product. For me, this was an inconsistent side effect. I will say that yes, most of the time, I found myself having to unleash a blast on my toilet an hour or two after working out. But in SP’s defense: 1. I’ve had the same issue with every other PWO I’ve tried, and 2. it’s not an entirely unwelcome side. To me it’s a bit cleansing; although I am pretty sure my wife would beg to differ on this point.
In short, SP250 is an old dog in the world of PWO’s and is quickly being left in the dust by the competition. If you’re thinking of trying SP250, BB.com has free samples available, however I warn you to try the product a handful of times before purchasing, lest you fall victim to the “New Relationship” effect I mentioned earlier.
