A while back I went to the 2012 IHRSA tradeshow out here in Los Angeles, & got an insight into the fitness industries latest contraptions to help you loose weight & tone up. All of it was borderline crap, save for some old school barbells and power cages. A few supplement companies where on hand promoting their wares and EAS was one of them. I got some pretty chill coupons for a few products, but only Betagen really interested me.
I was pleasantly surprised by this product, but still feel its ***-poor value drags it down.
MIXABILITY: A
The powder was quite fine, & took little effort to get it to completely mix into water. EAS claims all you need is 4oz, but personally I wouldn’t dip to far below 10oz. Personal preference at the end of the day. Would always mix in clean & wouldn’t leave any girt behind at all. On occasion though, if I let it sit for awhile before drinking it would leave some.
One interesting problem I had though was with the powder in the tub. I normally give the tub a shake or two, to break up any settling that may have occurred. However, with Betagen the powder would begin to settle back down rather quick. I have no idea what to make of that, but aside from it mixability is topnotch.
TASTE: A
I bought the orange flavour, and it reminded me of Tang to a point. Very smooth taste, easy to down, & most importantly very enjoyable. Definitely taste like an artificially sweetened drink, but I’ll take it. Most definitely one of the better tasting supplements you’ll find.
EFFECTIVENESS: B
This was a little hard to gage since I was using Betagen stacked with Erase Pro and Super Size. Barely lasted 3 weeks though, so not a whole helluva lot is to be expected.
I dosed Betagen 2 scoops per day for the first 2 weeks, one post workout and the second about one hour before bed. For the last week, I went to the max dose of 3 scoops per day, 1 pre workout (usually with Super Size), 1 post workout, and the last one hour before bed.
I want to attribute the strength gains I’ve made to Betagen, but what I’ve read from the reviews of Erase Pro they noticed strength gains from it as well. So, that being said, I feel I can attribute some of the strength gains to Betagen.
Recovery was good. I wasn’t completely cured of soreness, or even immune to some of the more crippling effects of heavy lifting sessions, but none of it was painful in the least bit. I would be sore the day after a heavy lifting day, but it seemed to remain just the real basic sensation of sore muscle. Even after the particularly brutal sessions, beyond some minor impairment to my ability to walk I felt fine. No pain whatsoever, just slightly sore muscles.
I most definitely made some noticeable size gains with Betagen. Nothing note worthy in terms of measurements (since I didn’t take any); but shirts fit tighter, yoke looks bigger, & most notably I fail a dexterity/flexibility test Raptor had mentioned in the forum some ago. I can’t touch my anterior deltoids with the corresponding hand at all right now. Before I could touch with the tip of my fingers, now there’s some good distance. Whether its solid muscle mass or water bloat, is undetermined.
Only side effects so far are the constant urge to urinate that is associated with consuming over 1gal of water per day, and some bloating. Nothing unbearable or troublesome.
Overall, Betagen performed admirably.
VALUE: F
Here’s where Betagen tanks.
Sale price at Vitamin Shoppe was just under $20, and the coupon I had knocked off another $4. Other suppliers here:
Bodybuilding.com: $13.49
AllStarHealth.com: $10.99
Decent price, but for what’s in it the price sucks. It has creatine monohydrate, L-glutamine, calcium HMB, & some taurine. That being said, everything seems under dosed a good deal. Only 2g of creatine, 2g of L-glutamine, 1g of calcium HMB, & only 500mg of taurine. I’m not entirely sure what the appropriate doses are of all the others, but to me the creatine is considerably unendorsed. 3 scoops will only net you 6g per day, whereas most recommendations are for close to 10g per day. Further more, there are only 20 servings per tub. So at the very least you’ll need two tubs even at 2 scoops per day.
At that rate & price the value is *** poor. There are better products, at better prices, for better values.
OVERALL: C
I really liked this product overall. I feel it’s a solid product that yielded some good results, and would love to be able to recommend it. However, the value destroys any hopes of that. It just doesn’t work at all in that respect, and they either need to increase the dose of at least the creatine or drop the price.
Solid product, but poor value.
