I’ve been on a bit of a review-hiatus lately as I simply haven’t had the time to write up anything proper. I apologize for my absence but no worries - Cray is back in the game.
My first experience with a
Dymatize protein powder was unpleasant to say the least, but when I started searching the market for a new protein blend I decided to give
Dymatize another shot. I ended up buying a tub of the Elite XT, and I’ve just finished a 4.4 lb. tub of the Fudge Brownie flavor. Primarily I used this product as a pre-bed slow-release protein source or as a mid-day shake.
**This product was formerly called
Elite 12 Hour Protein**
TASTE: 5/10
My
Original problem with
Dymatize had to do with the taste of their protein. I simply couldn’t stomach the regular Elite and had to return the tub I purchased. The XT was a bit better in this regard, although I was by no means blown away by the taste. The Fudge Brownie has a solid chocolate flavor and does taste like its name, but there was always an odd after-flavor that I did not enjoy. In short, XT doesn’t hold a candle compared to products like
MyoFusion or
Prota-Lyn.
MIXABILITY: 6.5/10
Again, XT is decent but unimpressive. The majority of the powder would mix without incident, but there was always a clump of particles at the bottom of the shaker cup that would not dissipate regardless of how long I mixed the product. As such the end swallow had the gritty texture of a mouthful of sand. Very unpleasant.
EFFECTIVENESS: 8/10
Aesthetics aside, XT offers a nice protein profile. A single scoop nets you 21g of protein and only 125 calories. The protein “matrix” includes whey, whey isolate, egg albumen and casein. Additionally XT throws in some nice bonuses like added
BCAAs, flax seed oil, and CLA, while avoiding all sugars and cholesterol. It’s important to note that the main ingredient of XT is casein protein, making it an ideal any-time powder and especially beneficial as a before-bed shake.
It’s hard to gauge the true effectiveness of a protein powder. In my opinion, protein powders are more of a “passive” supplement and are intended to be a nutritional staple. As such, I generally look to the nutritional make-up of a product in determining its effectiveness.
VALUE: 9.5/10
At $34 for a 4.4 lb. tub and 0.58c per serving, XT is one of the more affordable protein blends on the market. In contrast, a 4 lb. tub of
Probolic-SR will run you 0.80c per serving as will ON’s NitroCore. Further stretching the wallet are BSN’s Lean Dessert and ON’s
100% Casein, both of which come in at a per serving cost of over $1.00.
OVERALL: 7/10
Elite XT is a solid protein powder option, especially for those of us who are on a budget. Although you do sacrifice some features – namely taste – the fact that XT costs nearly half as much as straight casein powders makes it worth a look. If you’re in need of a pre-bed
slow release protein source, Elite XT is a solid product that won’t break the bank.
