This is a review that I have been really eager to get written. Regardless of age, gender, body type, or goals, Beta-Alanine can provide enormous benefits. This is a supplement that is in the same category as Creatine, Multivitamins, and Whey Protein with regards to importance. However, it is incredibly overlooked and/or under-dosed throughout the supplement industry.
The science: Beta-Alanine directly increases intra-muscular carnosine levels. The increase in carnosine, increases endurance and decrease fatigue, and also increases the total amount of work that a muscle can do. If anyone would like more in-depth information or links to the studies, feel free to PM me or comment below.
Dosage: 10/10- Science typically says you need 6.4 grams of Beta-Alanine per day. If you currently get your Beta-Alanine from Anavite, you would need to take 12 pills per day. If you get your Beta-Alanine from your Pre-Workout, it is very likely that you would need to take 4-6 scoops per day, everyday. And here is the thing, Beta-Alanine doesn't have great immediate benefits. Yes, you will get tingles, but those tingles are not what is helping your workout. You need to dose Beta-Alanine @ 6.4 grams every single day to reap the maximum benefits from the increased carnosine levels.
Mixabilty & Taste: 9/10- BodyStrong Beta-Alanine Powder is pure Beta-Alanine so it is very easy to add to your morning OJ, Apple Juice, or Whey Protein. It is tasteless and mixes very well. I don't personally like it mixed with water but anything else is fine and nearly unnoticeable.
Value: 10/10- This is where BodyStrong shines. If you can find a better value, please comment below because I search high and low for the best deals and I am unable to find a better price from a reputable company. I bought the 2000 grams container for $49.99. That provides me with 312 days worth of Beta-Alanine @ 6.4 grams per day, for under 16 cents per day. (Note- I wrote this review after 45 days of usage.)
Effectiveness: 10/10- Bodybuilders and marathon runners alike can benefit from daily Beta-Alanine usage. When I started taking Beta-Alanine, I was only running 2-4 miles, 3-4 days per week. After 45 days of usage, I am running 4 miles @ 8 mph, 4-5 days per week. After a week is when I really started noticing the benefits. Simply put, my legs just didn't burn anymore, and my runs began to get more effortless at an accelerated rate.
With regards to lifting, I would equate the effects of Beta-Alanine to the effects that I noticed the first time I used creatine in high school. The reps and weight in every exercise went up substantially over 45 days. Beta-Alanine helps fight fatigue and bust out those important last 2-3 reps in the hypertrophic ranges.
Side effects: 9/10- "Beta tingles" were slightly annoying but after 20-30 days of usage, you don't notice them as much.
Overall: 10/10- Beta-Alanine is not a "weight loss" supplement but it is a "weight loss" enabler. It helps fight fatigue which helps you preform more cardio which burns more calories and helps you lose weight. Beta-Alanine is not a "muscle building" supplement but it is a "muscle building" enabler. It helps you perform more reps in the hypertrophic ranges, which with a correct diet, will help you build muscle. I would put Beta-Alanine as 4th on the list of importance, behind Diet and Whey, Multivitamins, and Creatine. Very often, I see people asking "what is cheap", "what is effective", "what is safe for my age". Your answer is Beta-Alanine. You can buy any brand of Beta-Alanine, I just choose BodyStrong because they are a reputable company with excellent prices. If you have never tried Beta-Alanine before, spend the $19 for 500 grams and get over 75 days worth and see for yourself.
